Disney posted its latest subscription update Wednesday for the streaming service, revealing that Disney Plus now boasts more than 50 million subscribers, up nearly 22 million since its last update two months ago, according to 9to5mac.com.

"The company and their management team must be given credit for pulling off one of the greatest product launches of all time," media analyst Michael Nathanson said in February.

Five months after its launch, the company inches close to its five-year goal. Disney Plus aimed originally to reach between 60 million and 90 million users in 2024, reports CNET.

For comparison, rival online television streaming service Netflix has 167 million global subscribers. Netflix has been around for more than a decade.

"We're truly humbled that Disney Plus is resonating with millions around the globe, and believe this bodes well for our continued expansion throughout Western Europe and into Japan and all of Latin America later this year. Great storytelling inspires and uplifts, and we are in the fortunate position of being able to deliver a vast array of great entertainment rooted in joy and optimism on Disney Plus," said Kevin Mayer, Disney's chairman of Direct-to-Consumer and International.

A few factors play into the continued rise in subscriptions according to 9to5mac.com.
