DeKalb County opened a new firefighting training facility last week.
The new DeKalb County Fire Rescue training academy will help prepare the county’s firefighting recruits, the department said in a Facebook post. The academy consists of 10 classrooms, separate locker rooms for men and women, an administrative building and other training facilities.
The new buildings located at 3161 Warren Road in Decatur were unveiled last Thursday during a ribbon-cutting ceremony. The project cost $1.9 million in Special Purpose Local Optional Sales Tax (SPLOST) funds. DeKalb recently used the same funding source to begin constructing a new fire station off Columbia Drive.
DeKalb received roughly $388 million in SPLOST revenue over a six-year period, which will be used to improve county infrastructure, parks, public safety and roads. More than $101 million was allocated for police, court and fire department projects.
