Two family members were shot, including an 8-year-old girl, when someone fired several rounds into their DeKalb County home Saturday night, authorities said.

DeKalb police were called just after 10 p.m. to The Villas at Panthersville, a troubled apartment complex on the 2900 block of Panthersville Road near Flat Shoals Road and I-285.

There, officers found a 24-year-old woman who was shot in the leg and stomach, and her niece who was suffering from a gunshot wound to her ankle, DeKalb police spokesperson Lt. Shane Smith said in a statement. The two members were taken to area hospitals for their injuries which police said are not life-threatening.

“Initial information indicates the victims were in their residence when unknown persons fired multiple shots from outside into the residence,” Smith said.

The Villas at Panthersville, formerly Hidden Villas, is among 275 of the metro area’s persistently dangerous complexes, according to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution’s “Dangerous Dwellings” investigation that looked into serious crimes, lax maintenance and other hazards in Atlanta neighborhoods.

Last February, police were called to the complex for a shooting and found 40-year-old Rodrigus Hull dead in the parking lot. At the time, Smith said witnesses reported seeing two men shoot at Hull as he tried to run away. In September 2023, a resident of the complex, Javonte Forts, was arrested after police said he shot and killed a suspected intruder who tried to take some of his belongings.

From 2017 through July 2023, police also reported 171 crimes at the 2929 Panthersville Road address, including two homicides, 23 aggravated assaults, three robberies, four rapes and two arsons.

No arrests have been made in connection with Saturday’s shooting, which remains under investigation, authorities said.
