Police are investigating a fatal incident in Atlanta involving an unhoused person and a Department of Public Works vehicle, officials said.
Officers responded to the 300 block of Old Wheat Street, near I-85 and the King Center, around noon Thursday regarding an injured person. Police did not provide further details into the incident, but said a man was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead.
A spokesperson for the city’s Department of Public Works told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution in an email that the agency is “aware of the tragic incident” and is cooperating with police.
“Our department routinely clears encampments that pose health and public safety concerns, always following days of outreach to connect unsheltered individuals with housing and support services,” the spokesperson added.
The agency did not say why they were clearing the encampment or what led to the man’s death.
The man was not publicly identified.
