A trio of Atlanta firefighters responding to a vehicle fire on I-285 in Fulton County were injured early Wednesday when a tractor-trailer carrying about 10,000 pounds of cheese crashed into their fire engine, authorities said.
Atlanta police said the mayhem started just after midnight as fire crews were working in the eastbound lanes of the Perimeter near the Jonesboro Road exit. At around 12:45 a.m., the tractor-trailer sideswiped the fire engine, causing some of the cheesy cargo to spill onto the road.
The firefighters were taken to Grady Memorial Hospital and were said to be stable, police confirmed.
According to authorities, the driver of the tractor-trailer was deemed to be at fault in the wreck, which caused “significant damage” to their vehicle and the fire engine.
“The at-fault driver was issued a citation under Georgia code 40-6-2 (obedience to authorized persons directing traffic),” police said. The truck driver also refused to be treated for minor injuries, Channel 2 Action News reported.
Both the original vehicle fire and subsequent crash caused significant delays. All eastbound lanes were blocked for about two hours, and the scene was eventually cleared by around 5 a.m.
