A train hit a tractor-trailer in South Fulton late Monday night, leaving nearby roads closed Tuesday.

The incident happened just before 10 p.m. at the intersection of Roosevelt Highway and Roberts Road, South Fulton police said. A tractor-trailer was attempting to pull into the Strategic Materials Inc. lot when it was struck by an oncoming CSX train as it crossed the tracks.

The train tracks run parallel to Roosevelt Highway between the road and the business. The area is right next to the I-285 interchange with I-85 and South Fulton Parkway, not far from Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport.

The truck driver and the train’s crew did not report any injuries, but the collision caused “extensive damage” to both the trailer and the front of the train.

Buffington Road at Roosevelt Highway remains closed Tuesday, as does Roosevelt Highway at Rockhill Road. Commuters should avoid the area, officials warned.

South Fulton Parkway is a good alternate, according to the WSB 24-hour Traffic Center.

“We appreciate the swift response of (the) police department,” a CSX spokesperson said in a statement. “The incident is under investigation.”
