Crews have completed repairs to Buford Highway in Brookhaven after a road surface collapse shut down a large portion of the busy thoroughfare Wednesday.

A sinkhole 13 feet in diameter was reported at around 6:30 a.m. in the northbound lanes just past Briarwood Road, according to the Georgia Department of Transportation. The lanes remained closed until 9:30 p.m., when the hole was filled and repaving was completed.

The road became compromised after a GDOT contractor struck the main water line late Tuesday while working on a sidewalk enhancement project, agency spokeswoman Natalie Dale said. While the pipe was sealed off following the impact, the sinkhole developed Wednesday due to the amount of water that had seeped under the road.

“A large vehicle ... hit that area of pavement, causing the collapse,” she added.

No injuries were reported and no vehicles got stuck in the sinkhole. A county official also confirmed that no DeKalb County customers were without water Wednesday as work was done.

Police rerouted northbound drivers onto the nearby I-85 frontage road and to Clairmont Road during the shutdown, creating a traffic snafu for much of the day through Brookhaven and surrounding areas. Normal traffic had resumed Thursday.
