Believing a murder suspect retreated back inside a southwest Atlanta townhome in early October, a SWAT team was called and broke down the door.

The officers rushed inside following the hours-long standoff at the Oakland Park Townhomes. But the suspect, who was accused of killing his roommate over money, was nowhere to be found, police said.

On Friday, 21-year-old Tyshier Denike, was arrested in connection with the homicide at the townhome community in the 1200 block of Oakland Drive. Denike was taken into custody by Atlanta police with help from the Clayton County Sheriff’s Office and Clayton Police Department, officials said.

He was booked into the Fulton County Jail Saturday on charges of murder, aggravated assault and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, according to online records.

The shooting happened midday on Oct. 5, 2024, when officers were called to Oakland Park Townhomes and found 28-year-old Eric Jones Jr. dead from several gunshot wounds.

Atlanta police Lt. Andrew Smith said the suspect fired at least five shots in the parking lot during a dispute over money. The SWAT team was called after police believed he retreated back inside the residence, located near the intersection of Lee Street and Campbellton Road. Residents were unable to enter their homes at the time, officials said.

But after clearing the apartment, Smith told reporters that the suspect was “not inside.”

Police have not shared what led to Denike’s eventual arrest over the weekend. He is being held without bond, according to online records.
