A security guard accused of stabbing a 90-year-old man more than 50 times at a Buckhead apartment complex in September has been indicted, according to Fulton County Superior Court records.

A grand jury decided last week that there was enough evidence to formally charge Janet Denise Williams, 65, with murder and two counts of felony murder in the death of Chun-ki Kim. She also has been indicted on charges of aggravated assault and exploitation and intimidation of an elderly person.

Williams’ attorney, Justin Showalter, could not be reached for comment Friday.

Authorities have not disclosed a motive for the crime, which shocked the many senior adults who live in the Marian Road Highrise. The building is owned by the Atlanta Housing Authority.

Inside Kim’s apartment, the only missing items were his wallet and an Atlanta Braves cap, police have said.

Kim was born in South Korea and moved to Atlanta in the 1980s. He worked to build bridges in the city until he was injured in an incident while helping a co-worker, his family previously told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. He later ran a metro Atlanta shoe repair shop before his retirement.

His caregiver called Atlanta police around 7:40 a.m. Sept. 25 after finding his body in his fifth-floor apartment on Sidney Marcus Boulevard near Piedmont Road.

According to police and court records, surveillance footage showed that Kim was last seen getting on an elevator to go to his apartment at noon the day before. Around 3:15 p.m., Williams also got on an elevator and took it to his floor. She was wearing a face mask and glasses.

When Williams got back on the elevator six minutes later, she was not wearing the mask or glasses, and her pants appeared torn and wet with a dark reddish stain, the AJC previously reported. She also appeared stressed and got off the elevator with a noticeable limp, according to an arrest warrant. She eventually made two more trips to the fifth floor.

Police previously said that Williams, who had worked as a guard in the building since December 2023, stood by the crime scene, watched investigators “closely” and even ”attempted to gain insight into the investigation by inquiring about evidence the police had collected,” according to a warrant.

Later, as Kim’s family members arrived at the complex upon learning of his death, they said Williams approached them and hugged them as they cried, the AJC previously reported.

One family member said Williams told them, “Your father was such a wonderful person and I don’t know why this happened.”

Williams remains in the Fulton County jail awaiting trial.
