A man was shot to death in northwest Atlanta on Thursday afternoon, according to officials.

The 40-year-old was gunned down around 4 p.m. at the Magnolia Park apartments on Magnolia Way, according to Atlanta police. The area is between Joseph E. Lowery Boulevard and James P. Brawley Drive in the Vine City neighborhood.

The victim was rushed to a hospital in critical condition and pronounced dead a short time later. His name was not released.

Police have not released any other details about the case.

The apartment complex, which includes odd numbers from 777 to 817 Magnolia Way, is among 272 of the metro area’s persistently dangerous complexes, according to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution’s “Dangerous Dwellings” investigation that looked into serious crimes, lax maintenance and other hazards in Atlanta neighborhoods.

From 2017 to July 2023, Atlanta police recorded 161 crimes at the complex’s addresses. They included two 2021 homicides, 36 aggravated assaults, 11 robberies, an arson and two rapes.

In July 2022, Atlanta announced that the complex was on its list of properties to be targeted for chronic crime and condition problems.
