A 25-year-old man was shot early Thursday after exchanging gunfire with a police officer in Columbus, officials said.

The shooting happened around 1:20 a.m. after a Columbus police officer responded to a domestic dispute between a woman and Jacob Kyle Brannon on 42nd Street, a quiet road near U.S. 27, according to the GBI. Officials said Brannon ran away from the officer and shot at them. The officer, whose name has not been released, was not struck.

“The officer returned fire, hitting Brannon multiple times,” the GBI said.

Brannon, who allegedly fired a handgun during the shootout, was taken to a hospital, where he is said to be stable, the agency said. He will be booked into the Muscogee County Jail following his release. In their statements, neither GBI nor Columbus police provided details about what charges he will face.

Anyone with more information about the incident is asked to contact the GBI’s Columbus office at 706-565-7888. After the investigation is completed, the case file will be given to the Chattahoochee Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office for review.

The incident marked the 11th officer-involved shooting the GBI has been asked to investigate in 2025, and the third since Monday. At the same time last year, the state agency had looked into five such shootings.
