Mourners should think twice before bringing backpacks or purses to the Carter Presidential Center in Atlanta this week.
MARTA officials on Sunday are warning people about a list of items that won’t be allowed during the viewing of former President Jimmy Carter. The public can visit the center through 6 a.m. Tuesday as the former president lies in repose.
“We’re seeing a lot of people carrying bags and want to ensure they leave them at home or in their car before taking MARTA to The Carter Center,” MARTA spokesperson Stephany Fisher said in a statement. “Prohibited items will be surrendered at The Carter Center and not returned.”
According to MARTA, other prohibited items include aerosols, bicycles, balloons, coolers, drones, mace, selfie sticks, thermal or metal containers, explosives, firearms, ammunition and non-service animals.
Carter died last Sunday at 100. He will eventually be buried in Plans, Georgia, next to Rosalynn Carter, his wife of 77 years. She died in November 2023.
As he lies in repose, MARTA announced it will provide free shuttles from the King Memorial station for people looking to pay their respects. Surrounding roads will be closed until noon Tuesday. Officials said people have to take a shuttle unless they are walking or biking to the center.
Rail service to the King station will operate continuously for 60 hours. While the shuttles will be free, the fare to ride to the King station will not.
