Authorities closed Powers Ferry Road in Sandy Springs for several hours Monday morning after a fire that forced a family from their beds.

The road was closed in both directions between Red Ridge Court, just south of Mount Vernon Highway, and North Powers Ferry Road while fire crews were at the scene. By 7 a.m., the Sandy Springs fire department was in the final stages of the firefighting process, and an investigation was just getting started.

According to fire Division Chief Chris Campbell, the blaze broke out at a 7,000-square-foot home shortly before 4 a.m. Smoke detectors and a barking dog alerted the sleeping family, and everyone was able to make it out before the arrival of the first fire crews, he said.

Fire broke out at a home on Powers Ferry Road shortly before 4 a.m., and flames were already shooting through the roof when the first crews with Sandy Springs Fire Rescue arrived.

Flames were already shooting through the roof when they arrived, Campbell said. Firefighters attempted to attack the blaze from the inside but had to pull back when the chimney collapsed into a portion of the second floor.

“No injuries reported by our crews,” Campbell said. “Everyone is safe and accounted for.”

The cause and origin of the fire remain under investigation.

The chimney of a 7,000-square-foot home on Powers Ferry Road collapsed into the second floor, forcing firefighters into a defensive position on the home's exterior. No one was injured, according to Sandy Springs fire.
