A man was taken to the hospital after crashing during a high-speed chase and gun battle with sheriff’s deputies in Clayton County, officials said.
The chase began in Fayette County with when deputies tried to pull over a car on GA-85 North around 7 p.m., the Fayette sheriff’s office said in a statement. The suspect vehicle was linked to a series of car break-ins, according to the sheriff’s office.
The car did not stop for Fayette deputies and instead sped away, the sheriff’s office said. Once the car crossed into Clayton, deputies with the Clayton sheriff’s office joined Fayette deputies in the chase.
While one suspect drove the car, the passenger began firing at the pursuing deputies, the sheriff’s office said. A gun battle ensued and the suspects' car hit at least two other cars during the chase, according to Channel 2 Action News.
The suspects eventually crashed on Tara Boulevard at Winding Way Lane and more shots were fired, the sheriff’s office said. Two suspects were taken into custody: A woman who was arrested at the scene and a man who was taken to the hospital with multiple gunshot wounds, according to authorities.
No deputies were injured during the chase or shootout, the Fayette sheriff’s office said.
Clayton Sheriff Levon Allen sent an alert just before 8 p.m. warning residents to stay away from the area around the crash. Allen said there would be heavy law enforcement activity at the scene.
The GBI confirmed it was investigating the incident but did not provide further details and sheriff’s office has not shared any updates.
The scene of the shooting is just south of Jonesboro, a little less than two miles below the county courthouse.
