A person was seriously injured in a shooting at a Clayton County motel Thursday afternoon, police said.

Officers were called to the American Inn and Suites in the 6300 block of Old Dixie Highway after Clayton police spokeswoman Julia Isaac said a 911 call came in at about 1 p.m. regarding a person shot. That person was taken to a hospital in critical condition.

The incident occurred both inside a room and outside, Isaac said, but no other details were released.

Authorities are asking the public to report any suspicious activity or people they might have experienced in the area. No information was provided about a suspected shooter.

“Detectives are still trying to determine who is the victim and who is the suspect,” Isaac stated. “We are not labeling anyone as a victim or suspect at this time.”

At the same motel, a man was arrested following a SWAT standoff in May. Clayton police were originally investigating alleged criminal activity at a nearby abandoned motel when two gunshots went off at the American Inn and Suites. Police said they then saw Kendrick Thomas walking across the parking lot with a gun.

After Thomas was taken into custody, authorities stated that they found several dogs, a snake and a turtle in his motel room. Animal Control responded to pick up the animals.

In July 2020, a man was shot at the motel while inside his car, according to police. He then drove through a fence and crashed into the extended-stay hotel next door.
