The Newton County Sheriff's Office investigated a head-on crash that killed five people Saturday.

Five people were killed in a head-on crash Saturday near Covington, the Newton County Sheriff’s Office said.

The crash occurred on Ga. 142 at Adams Circle shortly before 4 p.m., according to spokespersons with the sheriff’s office and Georgia Department of Transportation. Investigators believe the driver of a truck crossed the center line and struck a van, killing all five inside the van, the sheriff’s office said Monday.

None of those killed were children, the sheriff’s office said. The driver of the truck was critically injured and taken to a hospital, investigators said. The names of those involved were not released pending notification of family members.

Jason Nichols, a GDOT spokesperson in the agency’s east central region, told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution it was raining in the area at the time of the crash. It was not known whether wet roads were a factor. The wreckage was still being cleared around 6:30 p.m., he said.

“I need y’all to be careful on the roads right now,” Nichols said in a video posted on Twitter. “Take caution. Take alternate routes. ... Let’s be respectful and let’s be careful.”

No further details were available Monday afternoon regarding the crash.
