Man killed in shooting at NW Atlanta MARTA station

A man was killed Tuesday at the Ashby MARTA station in a shooting that brought the east-west line to a halt at the start of the evening commute.

MARTA police confirmed the shooting occurred at about 4:30 p.m. on the concourse level of the Ashby station, which is located on the corner of Joseph E. Lowery Boulevard and Lena Street in northwest Atlanta. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene, according to police.

The man was identified as 20-year-old Charles Perkins of Douglasville by the Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Few details were available Tuesday, said MARTA police spokeswoman Sgt. Deneya Littles, who asked for patience from the public as the investigation unfolds.

“Our Criminal Investigations Unit is in the very early stages of their investigation,” Littles said. “They are working on identifying any suspects and the motive for the shooting.”

The deadly shooting shut down the Ashby station for several hours, forcing commuters off their trains at several other stations on the city’s Westside. A bus bridge between Vine City and the Bankhead and West Lake stations was ended at 8 p.m., when normal rail service resumed.
