Two children were shot inside a northwest Atlanta apartment complex late Thursday, according to police. Investigators believe those shots were intended for someone in another unit.

It was the first of two shootings within hours involving children, Atlanta police said.

At 11:34 p.m., officers were called to the Shawnee Apartments at 1220 Gun Club Road. A 9-year-old had a gunshot wound to the left arm and a 5-year-old had a wound to the left elbow, according to police.

“Preliminary investigation indicates the two juveniles were sitting on a couch inside the home when shots were fired from outside the building, appearing to be from the parking lot,” police said. “It appears the target of this incident was one of the apartment units below.”

The investigation into the shooting continued Friday.

Hours later, at 2:23 a.m. Friday, officers were called to the 3300 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Drive in southwest Atlanta after another child was shot.

The victim, whose age was not released, was alert when he was taken to the hospital, police said.

“Preliminary investigation indicates the victim was walking from the store and cut through a parking lot and noticed a vehicle sitting idle,” police said. “He stated the occupants of the vehicle then began shooting at him.”

Investigators said a crime scene could not be established where the victim said he was shot. The shooting also remained under investigation Friday.
