A 13-year-old boy is fighting for his life after a driver ran over a curb, hit the teenager and sped away from the scene, authorities said.

The incident took place about 6:30 p.m. Tuesday along Kelly Mill Road in Cumming, Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Stacie Miller said. The teen was walking on the sidewalk with his dad when an Infiniti QX56 approached.

The child’s father attempted to get the boy out of the way but injured his leg in the process, Miller said. Both were taken to a hospital, and the child was airlifted to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta due to his life-threatening injuries.

The SUV’s driver, who has not been identified, was caught after deputies found a QX56 with a damaged front end that matched the hit-and-run vehicle’s description. The driver was taken into custody along Jason Drive. Charges in the case are pending, authorities said.

Cumming police initially responded to the call, but they determined the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Specialists Unit would work the crash.

The investigation is ongoing.
