A 7-year-old boy is dead and an 18-year-old is injured after a double shooting in Clayton County on Saturday afternoon, police said.

Officers responded to 1600 block of Lamont Avenue in Conley about 5:40 p.m. after receiving a call about a person shot, Clayton County police spokeswoman Lt. Cherie West said.

“Upon arrival, officers learned there were two shooting victims,” West said. “Each victim was struck at least one time, with the 7-year-old succumbing to his wounds.”

The shooting was the result of an altercation between the 18-year-old and the occupants of a white sedan, authorities said. Investigators learned the 7-year-old boy was not related to the older teen and had nothing to do with the dispute. He was struck by a stray bullet while inside his home, West said.

The men inside the car fled the scene before officers arrived.

The 18-year-old was taken to the hospital, but his condition is unknown.

Clayton County police have not released the names of either victim, and the investigation is ongoing.
