An 86-year-old homeowner has died days after he was assaulted during a burglary at his Bartow County residence, officials confirmed.

The Bartow sheriff’s office was notified of the man’s death by the coroner’s office, agency spokesman Maj. Jonathan Rogers confirmed to AJC.com on Monday.

While the sheriff's office has not released the victim's name, Bartow County Coroner Joel Guyton identified the victim as Calvin Lee in an interview with Cartersville radio station WBHF.

Lee had been in an Atlanta hospital since the attack, which happened Wednesday evening at his home on Floral Drive near Cartersville.

Deputies were sent to the home about 7 p.m. after receiving 911 calls about a disturbance. When they arrived, they discovered the homeowner had been assaulted with a board, Rogers said.

The suspect in the burglary had been shot several times by the victim’s neighbors, who heard the commotion and rushed to help, police said.

The suspect tried to attack the neighbors with a metal post, Rogers said Friday. He was held at the scene until deputies arrived.

The home invasion suspect, who has not been identified, was taken to another hospital for treatment of his gunshot wounds and is expected to survive. He is charged with burglary, two counts of aggravated assault and one count of criminal trespass.

“We are still working on the case finalization and expect that more charges will be added to the offender today,” Rogers said Monday.

The neighbors who helped will not be charged.
