A high-speed police pursuit in Smyrna nearly ended when a truck allegedly crashed into vehicles, while running a red light.

However, that wasn’t the end of it, according to dash cam video obtained by Channel 2 Action News.

The driver, Carl Stroud, can be seen allegedly jumping out of the truck on South Cobb Drive but leaving the vehicle in drive. The truck continued for another quarter mile, running through bushes and crossing into oncoming traffic.

Smyrna police officers split up to chase Stroud and his runaway vehicle, Channel 2 reported.

“Our officer was alert enough to continue to follow the vehicle and to try to get other people out of the roadway,” Smyrna police spokesman Louis Defense told the news station.

Stroud was caught and arrested by police in nearby woods, Defense said. He allegedly stole beer, steaks and hot dogs from a nearby Kroger, prompting the chase that ended up reaching speeds of 75 mph on the busy road.

Stround faces 12 charges, including three felonies for hit and run and fleeing a police officer, according to Cobb County Jail records. He has been denied bond.
