DeKalb County police sent AJC.com the video, which shows a man wearing a hoodie, San Francisco 49ers hat and a bandana over his face enter the restaurant before standing on a booth and pulling out what appears to be a handgun.

The cook who was shot by the alleged robber told Channel 2 Action News he attempted to stop the robbery, which police said took place around 4:30 a.m. at the restaurant in the 1100 block of Columbia Drive.

The cook, who asked to remain anonymous, told the news station his coworker was giving the gunman money from the register when he cocked his gun in her face. He said he had to do something.

“Then when he started pointing the gun towards her, I just went ahead and grabbed it,” the cook said. “(There) was a little tussle for a second.”

During the struggle, the cook was shot in the stomach, requiring him to have surgery that evening, the news station reported. He remains in the hospital recovering in stable condition.

The cook’s mother told Channel 2 it was a miracle her son survived this incident. She wasn’t surprised he would step up to protect others, though.

“I think he’s always going to do what he has to do to protect others,” she said. “He doesn’t think about himself first, and at that point, he felt like there was danger, so he reacted as much as he could.”

The armed robber left in a vehicle with an unknown amount of money taken from the Waffle House, police said. Authorities are still searching for the suspect.
