A 13-year-old boy has died a week after a woman drove over a curb, hit him and left the scene, Forsyth County officials confirmed.

The teenager, identified on a GoFundMe page as Leonardo Camacho, died in a hospital Sunday night.

The incident took place about 6:30 p.m. Tuesday along Kelly Mill Road in Cumming, according to Forsyth sheriff’s office spokeswoman Stacie Miller. The teen was walking on the sidewalk with his father as an Infiniti QX56 approached.

The man attempted to get the boy out of the way but injured his leg in the process, Miller said. Both were taken to a hospital, and the child was then flown to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta with life-threatening injuries.

The SUV’s driver, who has not been identified, was caught after deputies found a QX56 with a damaged front end that matched the hit-and-run vehicle’s description. She was taken into custody along Jason Drive and is “currently in a facility,” Miller said.

Once the woman is released, she will be charged with hit-and-run resulting in death, vehicular homicide, failure to maintain lane, DUI less safe alcohol, reckless driving and driving too fast for conditions, Miller said.

The investigation is ongoing.
