Authorities identified a man accused of kidnapping his girlfriend’s 4-year-old son after a dispute with the woman’s father in Barrow County.

Nicholas Dempsey faces four charges, including aggravated assault and kidnapping of a minor, after the Tuesday afternoon incident, the Barrow County Sheriff’s Office said in a Facebook post. It prompted an hourslong manhunt for Dempsey and the boy, AJC.com previously reported.

About 1:30 p.m., deputies were called to a home off Country Court near Auburn, where a man said his daughter’s boyfriend attacked him and took off with her child, the sheriff’s office said.

Sheriff Jud Smith previously said Dempsey went to the house to pick up a few things while his girlfriend was at work, which led to an argument and tussle between the two men. Dempsey is not the child’s biological father, authorities said.

Barrow County deputies called in assistance from Auburn police, Gwinnett County police and a Georgia State Patrol helicopter to search for Dempsey and the missing child, Smith said. The two were found near Wages Road about two hours later.

The child, who was not harmed, was returned to his mother and grandfather, while Dempsey was detained. In addition to the two felonies, he faces counts of third-degree child cruelty and simple battery against a person older than 65.

Dempsey remained in the Barrow County jail Wednesday, the sheriff’s office said.
