Two 16-year-old boys accused in an armed robbery that turned deadly have been charged as adults, Cobb County police said. The investigation into the incident prompted a fatal officer-involved shooting in Cobb on Thursday.

Elijah Bailey and Damon Shropshire were arrested and charged with armed robbery, murder and aggravated assault in the death of 22-year-old Daquan Murphy, Channel 2 Action News reported.

Murphy was shot and killed Tuesday morning at an apartment complex near Austell, Cobb police said previously.

Cobb police also linked 19-year-old Samuel Mallard to Murphy’s death, officials said.

The investigation into the incident brought police to Mallard’s home in west Cobb on Thursday morning.

Officers encountered Mallard as he was leaving the Mill Chase subdivision and a confrontation ensued.

“Officers confronted Mallard to take him into custody and gave him verbal commands,” GBI spokeswoman Nelly Miles said. “During the incident, four CCPD officers fired their weapons, striking Mallard. Medical services responded, but Mallard was pronounced dead at the scene.”

The teen had a history of run-ins with police, and was arrested for impersonating an officer more than a half-dozen times in recent years.

His most recent Cobb County arrest occurred in July 2019, when he repeatedly crossed a police line at the scene of a Smyrna business fire despite being told not to, his arrests warrants show.

According to warrants, this wasn’t Shropshire’s first arrest either. The 16-year-old was arrested in November after allegedly holding up a 14-year-old with a silver handgun and stealing his iPhone, Airpods, and a wallet containing $40, court records show.

He was released from jail last month on a $40,000 bond, Channel 2 reported.

Both Shropshire and Bailey are currently being held without bond, but it’s unclear if they are being housed at Cobb’s Adult Detention Center or Youth Detention Center.
