Marietta police have charged a teen with driving into a Cobb County deputy.

The vehicle that struck Deputy David Corish was driven by a 16-year-old Atlanta boy, police spokesman Chuck McPhilamy said in a release. It was reported stolen out of Atlanta.

Generally, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution does not identify juveniles who are accused of crimes.

The deputy was monitoring security video just before 4 a.m. Monday when he saw a vehicle pull near the courthouse on Waddell Street off the Marietta Square, and appear to break into a parked car.

Corish walked outside and confronted two people, McPhilamy said.

“One suspect ran on foot while another got back into their own vehicle and maneuvered aggressively toward the deputy, striking him with the vehicle,” he said. “The deputy drew his agency-issued duty weapon and fired toward the suspect vehicle during the incident.”

Atlanta police later notified Marietta officers an “uncooperative” juvenile, possibly matching a police lookout, was being treated at Atlanta Medical Center for a gunshot wound, according to McPhilamy.

Meanwhile, a Georgia State Patrol trooper found an abandoned vehicle matching the one in the lookout on I-75 with a bullet hole in the windshield.

Marietta detectives secured physical evidence linking the teen to the stolen vehicle, now recovered.

He faces charges of aggravated assault on an officer, aggravated battery on an officer, entering auto with intent to commit theft or felony and theft by receiving stolen property greater than $1,500.

The investigation is ongoing, and police still are trying to identify the second suspect who ran from the scene.

Corish was released from the hospital and is recovering from his injuries, according to McPhilamy.
