A North Georgia teenager remains behind bars after a single-vehicle wreck left one of his passengers dead and two others injured, authorities said.
State troopers responded to the fatal crash shortly after 10 p.m. Sunday in Gilmer County. According to police, Max Evans, 19, of Ellijay, lost control of his vehicle on Ga. 282, overturning and striking a tree.
Three of Evans’ passengers were ejected in the crash, according to the Georgia State Patrol. The front-seat passenger, 19-year-old Patrick Spagnola, was pronounced dead when emergency crews arrived at the scene.
Two teens who were riding in the back seat were injured in the crash, authorities said. They were identified as 16-year-old Cloey Essay of Ellijay and 18-year-old Jessica Mae Elmore of Jasper.
Elmore was taken to Wellstar Kennestone Hospital in Marietta, while Essay was taken to Erlanger Hospital in Chattanooga. No updates were provided on their conditions.
Evans suffered minor injuries in the wreck but did not need medical treatment, according to the GSP. He was arrested at the scene after state troopers determined he was under the influence of alcohol, authorities said.
He is charged with DUI, first-degree homicide by vehicle, two counts of serious injury by vehicle, reckless driving, failure to maintain lane and distracted driving. Evans remains held at the Gilmer County Jail on a $19,000 bond, records show.
