A SWAT standoff at a DeKalb County motel Wednesday morning ended peacefully after about two hours when a man who police said had shot at his girlfriend surrendered to officers.

DeKalb police Capt. S.R. Fore said officers initially responded to reports of shots fired at the Motel 6 on Lawrenceville Highway at Montreal Road shortly after 6 a.m.

Once there, they were told by a woman that her boyfriend “was in one of the rooms, had done some narcotics and had fired a shot at her,” Fore told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. The girlfriend was not injured, he said.

Officers went to the room and found a bullet hole in the window. When the suspect saw the officers, he retreated into the bathroom.

“He informed officers that he was armed and that he was not coming out,” Fore said.

SWAT officers called to the scene were able to negotiate with the man, who opened the door to the bathroom and surrendered shortly before 8:30 a.m., Fore said.

The man, whose name has not been released, was taken to a local hospital for treatment of a suspected drug overdose.

“He’s obviously under the influence of an unknown narcotic and as a result of us not knowing what that is or how much he’s ingested, he’s been taken to an area hospital,” Fore said.
