A 38-year-old South Georgia man was arrested Thursday after he went door-to-door in a “quarantine suit” and asked neighbors if they had been tested for COVID-19, authorities said.
Kyle Keener of Jesup faces one count of impersonating a public officer or employee and two counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor after authorities said he and two juveniles drove around their community in a golf cart claiming to be with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Deputies were called to Heather Road about 10:15 p.m. after a resident said two people knocked at their door wearing tan and white hazmat suits with black masks and asked if they had been tested for the virus, according to a Wayne County Sheriff’s Office incident report obtained by AJC.com.
Several neighbors said Keener, who lives on the same street, had been seen wearing the suit to the local Walmart the previous two days and that he even posted a photo of it to his Facebook page, according to the report.
Keener wasn’t home at the time, but deputies spotted his golf cart parked outside a home on South Forest Drive and questioned the man. One of the juveniles inside reportedly said the 38-year-old drove them to about five homes that evening, but insisted they were all his friends’ houses. The two suits were located inside the home and taken as evidence, according to the report.
Keener was arrested at the scene and taken to the Wayne County Jail. The two juveniles, who are brothers, were taken to the sheriff’s office and charged with reckless conduct before being released to their parents.
Keener was released from jail Friday after posting a $6,250 bond, records show.
