A standoff between a South Fulton man and a would-be car thief ended in gunfire Wednesday, and police said the thief got away empty-handed.

South Fulton police have now released video they say shows the alleged thief in an effort to identify him.

The victim’s wife realized someone was taking her husband’s vehicle about 1 a.m. Wednesday, when she heard the car start up in their driveway in the 3200 block of Sable Run Road, according to police. Her husband grabbed his handgun and took off running after it.

The vehicle drove into a neighbor’s yard, and police said the car’s owner drew his gun on the driver.

“The victim approached the suspect at gunpoint, instructing him not to move,” a police spokesman said in a statement. “Shots rang out from the neighborhood in the nearby vicinity, and the owner of the vehicle was grazed in the arm.”

Police have not said who fired the shots. The driver then ran off into nearby woods.

Anyone who may recognize the man in the video is asked to contact South Fulton detective C. Burke at 470-809-7300.

Tipsters can remain anonymous, and be eligible for rewards of up to $2,000, by contacting Crime Stoppers Atlanta at 404-577-8477, texting information to 274637 or visiting crimestoppersatlanta.org.
