Six teenagers were taken into custody Monday after allegedly breaking into and stealing from multiple cars in a Cherokee County neighborhood, according to Canton police.
The six youths might be tied to as many as 40 car burglaries in Cherokee and Cobb counties, Channel 2 Action News reported.
The Monday break-ins happened in the early morning hours in the Great Sky subdivision, police said. The six teens allegedly entered multiple cars and stole four handguns, ammunition, a laptop, clothing, a camera and other items.
Police told Channel 2 the alleged burglars were caught after a group of neighbors banded together to track them down.
Police told the news station they pointed laser lights to blind driveway security cameras. Then they searched and burglarized the vehicles. Several of the burglaries were caught on surveillance cameras.
Brandy Goldberg told Channel 2 she was in her home when she heard a loud bang and a car alarm going off. She said someone smashed the window of her neighbors’ truck.
Goldberg said she chased the alleged burglars to try to get a video of their faces.
“I went live on the neighborhood Facebook page and I said ‘if anyone is awake now, go peak out your door and get a location on these guys,’” Goldberg told Channel 2.
Before the alleged burglars could make it out of the subdivision, a resident had called police.
Officers found four suspects as they were trying to leave the subdivision in a dark-colored passenger car. Two others were running toward the car, police said. Those two appeared to have been exiting a victim’s truck, police said.
All six were arrested and are facing felony entering auto charges, police said.
Taken into custody were: Quinn Chajuan Dawson, 19, of Atlanta; Jacquez Daquan Ivey, 19, of Warm Springs; Darell Marrion, 17, of College Park; and Tyjuan Shecorn Burch, 18, of Atlanta. The other two suspects were minors.
Investigators in Canton said they found stolen property from other entering auto cases that occurred Friday night in the River Green subdivision. Detectives are trying to determine if the six are related to other car burglaries in the area.
