A 16-year-old from Atlanta died Friday night after driving a stolen car the wrong way on I-20 in east Georgia, crashing into a median and sending the vehicle airborne, Augusta-based WRDW-TV reported.
Jamari Thompson was killed and an 18-year-old passenger was injured in the crash, which took place in Taliaferro County, the news station reported.
Deputies found the wrecked vehicle in an embankment near exit 148, WRDW reported. Investigators believe the driver got off the interstate and then got back on going in the wrong direction.
Thompson was pronounced dead at the scene. The passenger, who was thrown from the car, survived with injuries. Neither his specific injuries nor his condition was provided. Both were wearing seatbelts.
The sheriff’s office told the news station that deputies spotted the vehicle being driven at a high rate of speed earlier that night and pursued it, believing it may have been stolen. Deputies called off the chase after the driver sped off.
WRDW reported that the car had been stolen from a fitness center in Horry County, S.C.
Taliaferro County is about 100 miles southeast of downtown Atlanta.
