A man wanted in connection with two deadly shootings was shot to death by police Wednesday in Columbus, authorities said.
Damion Collier, 24, of Columbus, was shot as officers tried to take him into custody, the Columbus Ledger-Enquirer reported.
Undercover detectives arrived at a housing complex about 4 p.m. Wednesday in search of the suspect, Police Chief Ricky Boren said.
Detectives followed a car as it left the complex and tried to take Collier into custody after it stopped for traffic, Boren said.
Police cars pulled up on either side of the vehicle, and at some point Collier reached for a gun in the car, according to the report.
Two officers fired, hitting Collier, police said. He was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Collier’s girlfriend, Tangerious McKelvey, who was driving the car, was not shot during the incident but was treated for minor injuries at a hospital, according to the GBI.
The GBI is investigating the incident, which is standard protocol in use-of-force cases. There have been 28 such investigations in 2018, according to GBI spokeswoman Nelly Miles.
