While several hundred Waffle House restaurants have closed due to dwindling demand during the coronavirus pandemic, two in Gainesville have continued to offer carryout services.

However, a man carried out more than waffles and hash browns Wednesday morning.

Police are searching for the man who held a Waffle House employee at gunpoint and stole an undisclosed amount of cash from the Pentee Drive restaurant, Gainesville police Cpl. Jessica Van told AJC.com.

Waffle House, a chain known for getting its restaurants back up and running after natural disasters, has closed the most locations in its history amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Waffle House spokeswoman Njeri Boss said the majority of closings are due to a lack of business with in-person dining shut down across most of the country, including Georgia.
