A man accused of fatally shooting his girlfriend in front of her children has been denied bond.

According to Channel 2 Action News, Nakotah Javez Smith had his first court appearance Monday.

Smith, 33, was arrested Saturday and charged with murder, aggravated assault and probation violation in connection with the June 15 shooting death of Crystal Vega, according to Floyd County Jail records.

Smith allegedly shot her in the head at a home on West 13th Street, according to the Rome News-Tribune. Family members told Channel 2 Action News that Vega was a mother of five and the shooting happened in front of two of her children.

Smith was arrested at a home on Hillside Drive after the Floyd County Sheriff’s Office received a tip, according to police. He is being held in the Floyd County Jail.

No date has been set for his next hearing, Channel 2 reported.
