Atlanta police are asking for the public’s help to identify a suspect in a recent armed robbery at a Midtown bistro.

Investigators believe the thief entered through an unlocked back door at The Federal on Crescent Avenue.

The bartending manager told police he was approached about 11 p.m. Nov. 22 by a man wearing a black hoodie with blue lettering, light-colored pants and a mask over his face. The man walked into an office in the kitchen, pulled out a small silver handgun and demanded he open the safe, according to a police report obtained by AJC.com.

The manager complied and handed over about $645 in cash from the safe.

On his way out of the store, the man was confronted by another employee who had just locked the front door for the night. The employee told police she thought she saw the man standing outside the restaurant earlier in the evening and assumed he was homeless.

She asked if he needed help. The man unlocked the door himself and took a right out of the restaurant toward 12th Street, according to police.

The man was seen by other witnesses on the street speaking to someone in an older-model, rust-colored Ford Explorer.

Police on Wednesday released surveillance video of a man matching the manager’s description of the robbery suspect. He is seen in the video walking along the platform in the Midtown MARTA station.

He should be considered “armed and dangerous,” Atlanta police spokeswoman Officer TaSheena Brown said.

Anyone with information about his identity is asked to contact the robbery unit at 404-546-6953. Tipsters can remain anonymous, and be eligible for rewards of up to $2,000, by contacting Crime Stoppers Atlanta at 404-577-8477, texting information to 274637 or visiting the Crime Stoppers website.
