A Cobb County mother is facing a murder charge after her 5-year-old daughter was physically assaulted at their apartment near Marietta, police said.

The child, whose name was not released, had visible injuries and bruising all over her body, as well as injuries on her neck consistent with strangulation, according to an arrest warrant obtained Tuesday by AJC.com. She was found unresponsive Monday morning at the Cumberland Crossing apartment complex off Hidden Glen Drive.

Her mother, 30-year-old Shekinah Ayesha Akbar, was arrested on charges of murder, aggravated assault related to strangulation and first-degree cruelty to children.

Officers responded to the complex about 9 a.m. Monday to check on the girl, Cobb police Sgt. Wayne Delk said in a news release. It is not clear who called 911.

The child was taken to WellStar Kennestone Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
