Almost two years after a home invasion in Gainesville, police have arrested a suspect following a hit on a set of fingerprints.

Gainesville police had been investigating a home invasion and sexual assault case from June 30, 2016, at a Vineyard Way apartment complex. They obtained evidence from the scene, including fingerprints, and continued running them through a criminal data base in hopes of finding a match, police Sgt. Kevin Holbrook confirmed.

When Edricus Jumario Mayfield, 18, of Flowery Branch, was arrested recently on unrelated charges and fingerprinted by authorities, the crime scene technician ran the 2016 prints again and they matched Mayfield, Holbrook said.

Investigators took out warrants for Mayfield on April 26 and he was arrested two days later. He remains in the Hall County jail.

Mayfield is charged with home invasion, aggravated sexual battery, attempted rape, kidnapping and third-degree child cruelty.

He allegedly entered the residence and bruised the victim’s arms “while in possession of a baseball bat,” according to the warrants. The child cruelty charge alleges this happened in the presence of two children, ages 4 and 9.
