A body found at an Athens construction site earlier this month has been identified as a missing Madison County man, police said.

Authorities announced Tuesday that the body discovered June 3 along Athena Drive was 33-year-old Timothy Mitchell Rowland, according to the Athens Banner-Herald. Previously, police said they did not believe the body to be Rowland's based on the available evidence.

The GBI Crime Lab, however, confirmed the man’s identity. The cause of death is pending an autopsy.

Rowland’s mother, Loretta Whittington, said her son was last seen May 23 at a Family Dollar on North Avenue in Athens. A report from the Clarke County Sheriff’s Office, however, later placed him at the InTown Suites off South Milledge Avenue.

Athens-Clarke County police are working with the Madison County Sheriff’s Office to investigate Rowland’s death.
