A former Alabama Department of Corrections officer has now been linked to sexual assaults in metro Atlanta dating as far back as 2010, according to police. And investigators believe he may be the suspect in other unsolved cases.

Matthew Moore, 48, of St. Clair County, Ala., was charged two weeks ago for his alleged role in a 2015 assault in Sandy Springs. Moore is now charged with a sexual assault that happened in February 2010 in Cobb County, police said.

According to a Cobb arrest warrant, Moore burglarized a woman’s home on Feb. 6, 2010, while wearing a badge and holding a handgun. Moore told the woman he was a Cobb police officer, according to police. He allegedly held the gun at the woman’s head and grabbed her hair while forcing her to perform sex acts, the warrant states.

Cobb police charged Moore with aggravated sodomy, aggravated assault with a weapon, impersonating an officer, burglary, false imprisonment and possession of a firearm. All of the charges are felonies.

Moore is also accused of a 2015 assault in Sandy Springs. In that case, he was charged with aggravated assault, aggravated sodomy, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, aggravated assault with intent to rape and false imprisonment, jail records show.

Moore had been employed with the ADOC since 2001, according to Alabama media reports. He resigned following his arrest and was extradited to Georgia.

Moore was being held without bond Monday afternoon in the Fulton County jail.

Atlanta police said Monday that evidence from a March sexual assault case involving a man posing as an officer has been sent to the GBI for possible DNA testing. Moore has not been linked to that case, Officer Stephanie Brown said.

“We are aware of the arrest of Mr. Moore and investigators are looking into the possibility he may be linked to our case,” Brown said. “At this time, further investigation is needed and the investigation continues.”
