Authorities have released the identity of a man who was shot and killed at a Dalton motel Saturday after allegedly trying to force his way into an upstairs room.
Gregory Eugene Walker, 36, of Ringgold, was killed when Jaycob Rory Kelsey, 23, of Dalton, fired at him from inside his room at the Motel 6 on Chattanooga Road, authorities said Monday.
Walker reportedly had an issue with the amount of noise coming from the room, Dalton police spokesman Bruce Frazier said.
Officers received a call about a noise disturbance at the motel about 2:30 a.m., according to police. Apparently, a guest on the first floor called to complain about the noise upstairs. When officers arrived, however, the occupants of both rooms were asleep, police said.
A short time later, officers were called back to the motel after Walker complained about noise coming from a different room, which turned out to be vacant, police said.
About 3:20 a.m., he walked up to room 226 and began banging on the door and threatening the occupant, authorities said.
Kelsey, who was inside the room, was armed with a handgun. When Walker tried to force his way inside the room, he was shot several times, Frazier said.
Authorities said Kelsey called 911 and rendered aid to Walker, who was declared dead when police arrived.
Police believe Kelsey acted in self-defense, but the shooting remains under investigation, Frazier said.
Anyone with information about what happened at the Motel 6 is asked to contact Detective Scott Murray at 706-278-9085, ext. 9148.
