A Cobb County grand jury has indicted a man accused of killing an 18-year-old Kennesaw State University freshman.

Kashman Rael Thomas, 22, is accused of shooting three neighbors, killing one, at the Stadium Village apartments in October. Oluwafemi Oyerinde, known as Femi, died from his injuries.

Days later, Thomas surrendered and was charged with murder, according to Cobb police. Thomas has remained in jail without bond since his arrest.

On Thursday, Thomas was indicted on 11 counts, including malice murder, felony murder, marijuana possession, violation of Georgia's controlled substances act and three counts each of aggravated assault and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, according to the Cobb District Attorney's Office.

Oyerinde graduated in May from Archer High School in Lawrenceville. He planned to study mechanical engineering and later join the military, his family said.

On the morning of Oct. 6, shots were fired in the off-campus complex where Oyerinde lived, according to police. Within hours, police issued an arrest warrant for Thomas.

The following day, the sheriff’s office requested help from the U.S. Marshals Service in locating Thomas, who later surrendered.

The freshman’s death shocked the KSU community. At least 300 students and staff members gathered for a vigil in his honor and more than 2,000 attended his funeral, a family friend said.

“It was the hardest thing I’ve had to experience,” Michael Aniagboso told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution after the funeral. “What can you say? There’s nothing we can say or do that will ease the pain for a mother who lost her only son.”

Cobb County police said someone shot 18-year-old Oluwafemi Oyerinde and two other people at Stadium Village Apartments on Sunday morning.
