A military contractor from metro Atlanta has been charged by the U.S. Department of Justice for her alleged role in a theft ring in Afghanistan, authorities said.

Varita V. Quincy of Snellville was indicted on three counts for her involvement in the alleged scheme, including conspiracy to defraud the United States, theft of property of value to the U.S., and making false official statements.

Quincy's charges come after a co-conspirator, Larry J. Green of Chesapeake, Virginia, pleaded guilty Wednesday to participating in the theft ring, which allegedly operated between late 2014 and mid-2015.

According to the indictment, Quincy and Green, along with other unnamed participants, conspired to steal equipment and military material while working at Kandahar Airfield in Afghanistan. Green found equipment like vehicles, generators, refrigerators and more, then negotiated their sale to people outside of the base, according to the indictment.

Quincy is alleged to have played an important role in the scheme by creating fake identification badges and paperwork, allowing Green’s buyers to access the compound. The outside buyers were unknown and unvetted to the military. Quincy shared in the profits of the illegally sold items, the DOJ said.

According to the announcement, the theft ring “(defeated) vital security protocols and (placed) civilian and military personnel at risk.”

The indictments are being prosecuted in the Eastern District of Virginia.
