A 20-year-old man was shot and killed outside a Morrow apartment complex Sunday night, Clayton County police confirmed.

Authorities are investigating why Rodricous Gates Jr.  was at the Hampton Downs apartments in the 6500 block of Mount Zion Boulevard and what led to the fatal shooting, Clayton County police Sgt. Ashanti Marbury told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Gates’ family told Channel 2 Action News that the former Mundy’s Mill High School quarterback had his own apartment and they were not sure why anyone would kill him.

“Everybody loved this child,” said Phillip Gillis, his stepfather.

Police said Gates did not live at the complex where he was killed.
