A man was found dead near Stone Mountain early Friday, and police say neighbors who heard a gunshot waited hours to notify authorities.

Officers responded to the 1100 block of Sheppard Place about 3:30 a.m. and found the 62-year-old man in a small detached building behind a larger main house, DeKalb County police Lt. Lonzy Robertson said. The victim was dead from a single gunshot wound.

“People in the main house heard a gunshot,” Robertson said. “After several hours passed, they went to check on the victim.”

The man’s name has not been released pending notification of next of kin.

No arrests have been made, and it’s unclear what caused the shooting or why neighbors took so long to check on the man.
