A felon wanted for murder in Alabama was captured Wednesday in metro Atlanta by U.S. Marshals, authorities said.

Demetrius James Anderson, 34, was taken into custody about 3:30 p.m., Dennis Durando with the U.S. Marshals Service told AJC.com. He was captured at a residence in Decatur.

Anderson was wanted in connection with the April 5 slaying of Tito Smith, 42, AJC.com previously reported. It happened at the Phat Tuesday Sports bar in Mobile, according to Mobile police spokeswoman Charlotte Solis. When officers arrived, they found Smith dead with a gunshot wound.

Mobile investigators believed Anderson was hiding out in Atlanta due to his past ties to the area, “including those criminal in nature.” Durando said Anderson does not live at the Decatur home where he was captured Wednesday.

Georgia Department of Corrections records show that Anderson was convicted on firearm and aggravated assault charges in 2010 in connection with a shooting in Clayton County. It happened the year prior at an apartment in Riverdale, AJC.com reported. Police said Anderson shot Chris Stephens several times at the Pembroke Town Homes off Ga. 85.

Police said Stephens and another person gave Anderson money to buy beer. The pair went looking for Anderson about 20 minutes later and found him inside an apartment unit, AJC.com reported.

Stephens and Anderson started arguing, and Anderson pulled out a silver handgun. Anderson shot Stephens several times, but when he pointed the gun at the other man it didn’t fire.

Anderson was convicted of two counts of aggravated assault, two counts of possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime and one count of impersonating another. According to jail records, he was held in the Clayton Transitional Center until Feb. 18, 2013.

Just over two years after his release, Anderson was accused of robbing a woman at gunpoint in Fulton County.

Atlanta police officers spoke with a woman March 24, 2015, who said Anderson stole nearly $4,000 in cash from her. The incident happened in the 1500 block of Hollowell Parkway, according to an incident report obtained by AJC.com.

The woman told police she had known Anderson for eight months and they had been living together for three. They went to cash an insurance check that morning, according to the incident report.

The woman told police that after they cashed the check, Anderson drove to the location, walked to her side of the vehicle and pointed a black and silver pistol at her. He told her to give him the money, the incident report said. The woman told officers Anderson threatened to shoot her “right here in this parking lot.”

He was arrested in DeKalb about five days later and booked into the Fulton jail. However, court records show he was never convicted.
