Man arrested, accused of fatal hit-and-run in Smyrna

Gabriel Cammon, 20, came forward to Smyrna police after he saw Channel 2's report on Thursday's deadly crash.

A man was arrested Saturday in connection with a fatal hit-and-run in Cobb County, police said.

Gabriel Alex Cammon of Powder Springs was taken into custody and accused of the hit-and-run that killed Raul Romero Dominquez of Smyrna on Thursday, Smyrna police said in a news release. Police previously said the hit-and-run victim was between 50 and 60 years old.

Dominquez was hit at the intersection of South Cobb Drive at Ask Kay Drive around 6:40 p.m., and investigators determined a white Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck from the early 2000s was the vehicle that hit him, AJC.com previously reported.

Witnesses said the Chevrolet’s driver got out of the vehicle after hitting Dominquez before panicking and driving away, Channel 2 Action News reported.

Cammon, 20, faces charges of felony hit-and-run, misdemeanor improper use of the center turn lane and driving with a suspended license, Cobb County Jail records show.

His ex-stepfather, Ben Tidwell, told Channel 2 on Tuesday that Cammon made a mistake and should have stayed to help Dominquez.

“I’m sure he was frightened,” Tidwell said. “He wanted to go home to say goodbye to his family.”

An investigation is ongoing, and additional charges are possible, the release said.

As of Monday morning, he remained in jail on a $100,000 bond, jail records show.
