After serving his first sentence in state prison, Chauncey Arthur Pope wasn’t a free man for long. Now serving his second sentence, the 28-year-old has another new charge to add to the list: murder.
Less than three months after his first release from state prison, Pope violated his probation and was returned to the Fulton County jail in September 2014, booking records showed. Oct. 2, 2014, Pope was free again, but on Dec. 14 the same year, he allegedly shot a man, Derrick Brooks, on James Jackson Parkway in northwest Atlanta, according to police.
In February, Pope was in jail on charges of aggravated assault, aggravated battery and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon when Brooks died, according to police. In April, Pope returned to prison following a separate burglary conviction in Gwinnett County.
On Monday, charges were upgraded against Pope to include murder, Atlanta police said.
The earliest Pope could be released from prison is July 2016, according to the Georgia Department of Corrections. He remained Tuesday in Calhoun State Prison in Morgan.
