A Woodstock man accused of shooting and killing his stepson remained in custody without bond following his court appearance Wednesday in Cherokee County.

Carl Lewis, 39, is being held at the Cherokee County adult detention center on charges of murder, aggravated assault and possession of a firearm in the commission of a felony, Cherokee sheriff’s spokesman Howard J. Baker said.

Attorneys representing Lewis can still file for bond, according to Channel 2 Action News.

Lewis allegedly admitted killing his stepson Bryce McCallum to Woodstock police officers who were directing traffic in front of the First Baptist Church of Woodstock on July 24, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution previously reported.

McCallum, 19, was getting ready for fatherhood and his second year at the University of West Georgia at the time.

McCallum's friends told Channel 2 that Lewis was "out of control." The two men fought a few days before the fatal shooting after Lewis allegedly punched McCallum's little brother.

“Bryce wasn’t having that,” Chris Kandra said. “He stuck up for his blood brother like anybody should.”

Ian Barnett said McCallum’s mother kicked Lewis out of the home.

“From my knowledge,” Barnett told Channel 2, “he came back and he was blaming Bryce for everything.”
